The Dickinson Museum’s new exhibit, “Gone to Texas: Women & Quilts”,  features fabulous 19th century quilts from Texas families.  The exhibit runs from March 2 to September 23, 2012.    Marcia Kaylakie, my colleague, is guest curator of the exhibit.  The Museum is located in Austin, Texas.

A new quilt museum has opened in LaGrange, Texas: Texas Quilt Museum.

The Museum states: It is housed in two historic 1890s buildings, which provide a fine showcase for both antique and contemporary quilt art .   You’ll find a wide range of quilt art on exhibit year-round at the Museum, from fine antique quilts in traditional patterns to contemporary works.

The opening exhibition is “Texas Quilts Today: Selections from the Book Lone Stars III,” a three-part showcase of the best in modern quilt making from the last quarter century by artists living in the Lone Star State. A wide variety of techniques, styles, and subject matter will be seen in three separate segments of the exhibit that will run through summer 2012.

At present, sixty-two quilts from the book, Lone Stars III: A Legacy of Texas Quilts, 1986-2012, written by Museum Co-Founders and Co-Directors Karey Patterson Bresenhan and Nancy O’Bryant Puentes, and published by the University of Texas Press, are on view through mid-January 2012. The book, which serves as the catalogue for the exhibition, includes a total of 200 quilts. The second part of the exhibit will open in February 2012, and the third and final part in June 2012.

A Study of 19th Century Star Quilts” at Rocky Mountain Quilt Museum through January 21, 2012, in Golden, Colorado.

Botanical Quilts are  on exhibit at the  Charleston Museum in Charleston, South Carolina, through April 22, 2012.

Historic Textiles Gallery

Charleston has a long and venerable quilt making history. Broderie perse or chintz appliqué, consists of floral and botanical printed fabrics imported from India, England and Europe. The quilt was made by cutting up these luxurious textiles and then reapplying the motifs to a larger fabric, carefully stitching around each element. Quiltmakers could create a stunning tree of life, a graceful floral basket or an album quilt of many different designs. Botanical Quilts examines the many different botanically-inspired quilts that graced the beds of Lowcountry residents throughout the 19th century.
