Approximately 20 World War II quilts and tops will be exhibited at the Huntsville Museum of Art in Huntsville, Alabama, through November 7, 2011.  Ephemera including photos, V mail, ration books, parachute samples, magazines and newspaper quilting patterns which anchor the time frame will be included.  These are from the Collection of Sue Reich.

The Benton County Historical Society & Museum in Philomath, Oregon, is showing “Beauty Secrets: 150 Years of History in One Quilt Pattern” through October 1, 2011.  The Smilebox presentation from The Quilt Show below is of some of those quilts of the New York Beauty design, a very graphic and loved pattern. The quilts are highly graphic and are beautifully quilted.  The quilts are from Bill Volkening’s Collection.

ART QUILTS LOWELL 2011: The Sea is an exhibition of art quilts from Canada and the United States with the theme “The Sea”, which will be from August 11 – September 10, 2011. at the Brush Art Gallery in Lowell, Massachusetts.  There will be an opening reception on Saturday, August 13th from 3 to 5PM during the Lowell Quilt Festival.

New PBS Series: “Why Quilts Matter: History, Art & Politics” Fall 2011 Season

The Kentucky Quilt Project, Inc., has created “a nine-part documentary series titled Why Quilts Matter: History, Art & Politics. The series takes a fresh look at quilts and spreads the word about their unique position at the center of a startlingly broad grid of topics, ranging from women’s studies to the contemporary art market.”  as stated on their site: www.whyquiltsmatter.org/welcome/about-the-series/
